Basic Affiliate Marketing Mistakes to Avoid
The statistics are devastating about the percentage of successful affiliates and the last number I saw was around 1%.
And I wonder why, when affiliate marketing business is the easiest possible business – recommending other peoples’ products for commissions, even too good commissions.
So, obviously there is a fundamental difference between the nature of the business and one’s capability to get profits out of it. I mean it is strange to have so high share of failures in a so easy and flexible business.
Of course there are many other factors involved like proper website structure, writing style, web traffic sources, ability to be different and to create and explore your own marketing style.
But now I want to point some very basic mistakes I made and I see very many marketers are still making.
- Participating in too many programs – affiliate programs are free and it is very easy to sign up for many identical programs. No one successful affiliate promotes nine auto responders or twelve hosting companies!
- Banner advertising only – don’t use ‘banners only’ promotional strategy – use them like a graphical asset to a written recommendation. Try to avoid the standard 468x60, avoid too flashy banners, I prefer skyscraper with clear message or joyful beautiful faces specially if targeting WAHM audience.
- Promoting unrelated programs – don’t recommend a barbeque on a tourism page – your visitors (if any) are not interested in what you are promoting, they are looking for vacation ideas …
- Relying for traffic only on PPC – especially for newbies, stay away from PPC as a primary traffic source because there is no faster way to quit your web business.
- Recommend, don’t sell - leave selling to the merchant. All you need to do is to build key phrase optimized webpage that gets targeted visitors.
On this web page you must diagnose a problem and smoothly recommend the affiliate product as a solution to that particular problem.
Chances such targeted visitors to click on your affiliate link and buy the product are quite realistic. - Many products on one page – that’s why I mentioned website structure above as an important factor in building a successful affiliate business. Don’t promote three email responders on one webpage.
If your site has a proper three level deep structure, on the second level (category pages) you can mention all your responders divided by price, ease of use, features and benefits, etc. and write recommendation about every single type on the third level (article pages).
This is not the whole list of possible mistakes, but if you revue your website once again and fix the above mentioned mistakes, you are going to see substantial growth in the amount of traffic you send to your merchants and in the commissions earned.
