If you type 'email marketing tips' in the search box of any search engine or directory or resourceful website, you will find too many bigger or smaller tricks authors claim to have a positive effect over the results of an email campaign.

This is the most advanced email marketing skill to master and only marketers who are enough technically educated will successfully solve it. Because first you have to know what targeting is and second: how to do it.
I will show you with this example why targeting has more technical than theoretical aspect.
No matter what kind of email marketing software you are using, you have to place a subscribe form to collect at least the email address of a visitor that want to receive your newsletter and you put this form on ALL your category pages: homepage, category 1, category 2 ...
You just missed a golden opportunity to register on what page did your visitor subscribe and what kind of information s/he is interested to receive or to buy?
The above problem can be solved by adding hidden fields to your subscribe form collecting category name and IP of the visitor and this information will be registered in your email data base.
You also need a properly structured tracking program to collect IP and URL pathway of every visitor on your site.
Google Analytics and All online applications are not suitable because you need this information in a separate table in your database to interact with information from other database tables. Forget about doing what I’m telling you manually because it will take forever.
Now you can check every subscriber through the tracking database table using her/his IP to see what s/he is doing on your site and what pages s/he is most interested in.
Now you have got enough information to target this subscriber and to send her/him what s/he wants and needs and is ready to pay for.
And what is a targeted email marketing message?
Simply, the same info part and targeted offers so subscriber from category 1 is receiving automatically advertising of category 1 product.
Advanced and efficient email targeting goes beyond 'blah-blah' and requires above medium practical knowledge on server side scripting.
So, targeting email subscribers is much more efficient way of increasing conversion rate of your email campaign that relying on stupid tricks that will offend the intelligence of your subscribers like 'strange' subject lines, 'lack' of unsubscribe link and more alike.
